Since the start of this year, yellow box junctions are on trial throughout Perth in a bid to stop vehicles queuing across an intersection when there is no room to exit completely. The hope for this new trial is that we as drivers will stop if we can’t clear the intersection completely, in turn improving traffic flow not just at the intersection but right through a road corridor. These are used successfully around the world including Singapore and the UK.
There are no new road rules, we are just being visually reminded of them. You may only enter the yellow box junction when there is enough space to clear the yellow box without stopping. But as has always been the case however, drivers who are turning right can stop in a junction if their turn is prevented by oncoming traffic until it is safe for the turn to be completed.
This is just one of the many new initiates of the Mains Roads’ Traffic Congestion Management Program. They are trialing two types of line markings to determine which lines are more effective, these are:
- A large box with a single cross within a boxed intersection (Singapore markings) and
- A large box with hatching throughout the intersection (UK markings)
The intersections where these markings are installed at are:
- Canning Highway and Kintail Road, Applecross
- Queen Victoria Street and Tydeman Road, North Fremantle
- John Sanders Drive and Herdsman Parade, Glendalough
- Mitchell Freeway southbound off–ramp / Vincent Street / Leederville Parade, Leederville
So when your next at any of these interactions take note of these new markings, be mindful of other drivers and remember our road rules.
